Vehicle Banksman Training Course

Vehicle Banksman training ensures that an organisation meets its legal requirements and reduces the risk of costly accidents when carrying out common, but dangerous, reversing manoeuvres.

This course aims to raise awareness of the dangers caused when large vehicles reverse, and introduces practical techniques and hand signals to assist drivers with this manoeuvre. Delegates will also be trained in the necessary skills to assist other drivers and banksmen.

Our Vehicle Banksman Training course can be held at our site in Dudley, West Midlands using our facilities and equipment. Instructors can also come to your site using your facilities and equipment to train your employees.

Course content

  • Responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 98
  • Banksman safety code
  • Banksman procedures
  • Risk assessing vehicle manoeuvre
  • Signal systems
  • Banksman PPE
  • Identify areas of danger within the site
  • Ensure the safe passage of reversing vehicles in confined spaces
  • Identify areas of danger within the site
  • Demonstrate HSE’s recommended code of signals
  • Guide large goods vehicles, both rigid and articulated, using the above code of signals to HSE Guide Notes HSG136 standard

On completion the training candidate will be able to undertake:

  • Vehicle movement risk assessment
  • Setting of manoeuvering area
  • Undertake signalling
  • Position vehicles
  • Control of banksman operation


Each successful operator will receive an A4 size certificate.



Trained Operator Passport Scheme

As an ITSSAR accredited training provider, MJP Forklift Training Services are pleased to offer registration on to the ‘TOPS’ scheme (Trained Operator Passport Scheme). The national certificate enabling operators to operate on multiple sites. All succesful candidates will be entered onto the TOPS national database on completion of this training course.
